Home Companion Dungarees in brown from Freddies of Pinewood.

The Home Companion Dungarees evoke a classic World War II land army style – practical, comfortable and flattering. They are made with 100% cotton denim and feature a removable bib allowing you to wear them as high-waisted 40s jeans when you wish. The bib fastens with a series of hidden buttons in the inside of the waistband – 3 buttonholes on the front, two at the back. The bib can be a little fiddly to get on, because the button is pushed through the buttonhole into the interior panel of the waistband and you can’t get at the button from both sides. This might be more to do with my dexterity issues, but it’s worth a mention. The four pocket detail on the front of the pants is not only adorable, but they are REAL POCKETS and very handy.

Freddies jeans are non-stretch, just as they were made back in the 40s and 50s, so be sure to read the sizing information and advice carefully. The waist measurement is not taken on a ‘cinched’ waist (like Vivien of Holloway pants for example). The waist-to-hip ratio is not as exaggerated as other brands, and there is very little give in the fabric. My first pair of dungarees were a pair of Freddies’ Dungaree Dolls, which were one size smaller. They were VERY tight and I had to stretch the denim so they would fit around my hips. The dungarees style suits a relaxed, non-figure hugging fit, and I have sized up with this pair and purchased the size slightly larger than my measurements, but again – it’s best to check the sizing information and contact Freddies for advice if you are unsure.

Freddies also gives you the option to choose a regular length leg or a long leg – check the size chart if you are on the taller side. I purchased the long leg, and have rolled them over once and they are the perfect length.

I have been stopped a number of times by ladies wanting to know where they can find these dungarees. I wear them regularly with work blouses in summer and knitted turtlenecks and 40s jackets in winter.
