Welcome to Brighton Bacall! I’m Caitlin – a vintage style loving, photography obsessed camera nerd from Australia living with multiple invisible chronic illnesses.
I started my Brighton Bacall Instagram account in January 2018 as an outlet for me to document my ‘good days’ when my health reached a point where I no longer had much quality of life. A lover of vintage style for many years, I began dressing in reproduction vintage on my rare good days to perk myself up. I documented my outfits on a completely private Instagram account so I could look back on my bedridden days and remember that, even if it felt like I would never feel better, I would, and I would still have days where I would be able to enjoy life.
Before I became too ill to work I was a keen photographer working in the camera department in the film and television industry, and taking and editing my own photos again helped to keep my morale up enormously while stuck in bed. As the serotonin started flowing again and my confidence dressing vintage grew, I opened up my Instagram account and began connecting with other lovers of vintage style around the world, hiding my chronic illnesses as a way of separating my two worlds – the Pasty Sick Girl and Brighton Bacall. Now, my Instagram account is a happy mixture of both – a place to document my outfits and share my love of vintage style and photography, but also a place where I can share the realities of my life for those interested in reading about it.
My website is an expansion on that idea, allowing me to post higher resolution images and searchable outfits, and talk more in-depth about my vintage life and the ‘Behind the Scenes’ of the highlight reel that is Instagram. Here you’ll find outfit photos, reproduction vintage reviews, and also blog posts about my life with chronic illnesses. Here’s how it works:
WARDROBE: Here you can find a virtual wardrobe gallery of all my reproduction vintage pieces. Designed to be a quick and easy way to find specific items you are interested in, you can curate the gallery to show only the garment category you are looking for, or the brand you are interested in. Click on a garment image to read my review and personal thoughts on the item, sizing information and measurements, where you can purchase your own, and also view a style gallery of all my outfit photos to date that feature that particular item. Unlike my standard blog reviews which will appear under the ‘Blog’ menu, I’ll continue to update each item in the virtual wardrobe with more outfit photos and feedback, so you can check back to see new styling ideas, colour options and updates on how the garments are holding up over time!
BLOG: My blog posts will feature my reviews of garments as I receive them, vintage-related musings, as well as posts related to life with my various chronic illnesses. I’ll be taking requests for topics over on Instagram, so if there’s anything in particular you’ll like me to discuss please let me know!
Why the name ‘Brighton Bacall’?
Initially, it started as a private joke. I had a friend who was always telling me I would only read a book if it had a pretentious title, so when I visited one of those ‘how to come up with a blog name’ sites to create my nom de plume I was looking to stick with the theme… One of the first suggestions on this site was to choose the area where you live, and combine it with someone or something you love that started with the same letter. Well, I lived near Brighton and had always admired the on-set fierceness and don’t-mess-with-me attitude of Lauren Bacall, and so Brighton Bacall was born. It has stuck with me ever since!
