The 30s Flutter Skirt in grey tweed by The House of Foxy.

This gorgeous 1930s style tweed flutter skirt is one of my favourite items in my wardrobe, to the point where it gets little wear because I see it as ‘too special‘ (eye roll) for every day outings. I feel so elegant and sophisticated wearing this skirt, there’s something about the way it makes me walk – the figure-hugging upper section with the ‘fluttery’ fabric around my knees – that really makes me feel like a Shelby up to no good in 30s Birmingham.

This skirt features 7 gores creating the authentically 30s ‘flutter’ structure, and is fastened by a rear centre zip and button. It does have quite a small waist-to-hip ratio, so it gapes a little at my waist and pulls tight across my hips (see below for my measurements), but I love it so much I don’t really mind, and it’s nothing an era-appropriate belt doesn’t fix! This is one of those pieces, though, where I’d recommend tucking your blouse into your underpinnings or tights to stop the shirt bunching around your middle. You can see evidence of this in the exterior photos below. This skirt is partially lined – enough to cover underpinnings – but the lining has a tendency to bunch up around the top of my hips as I move around. If you wish to wear tights or stockings, I’d recommend wearing a longer, more substantial slip underneath.

The wool fabric is lovely and soft (Fibromyalgia-friendly in my personal experience), and isn’t as heavy and restricting as I was expecting – it does contain 2% elastane – and though it is quite thin, it is still comfortably warm. I’ve been able to wear this skirt with knitted tights throughout the Melbourne winter.

This skirt from House of Foxy looks and feels every bit as wonderful as I’d hoped. I’m keen to add some more colour options to my wardrobe, and also give their recent addition – the 30s Deco Panel skirt – a whirl to see how it differs!

Flutter Skirts and Deco Panel Skirts are currently stocked by Australian House of Foxy stockist Call Me Valerie.
