43″ Swing Coat in houndstooth check by Seamstress of Bloomsbury from Call Me Valerie

I’ve been adding more dressy, sophisticated pieces to my wardrobe during lockdown; this extended period of time left cooped up to daydream has made me keener than I have been in a long time to head into the city for a night at the theatre or MSO. These used to be two of my favourite weekend activities, so hopefully having ritzier outfit choices will help push me to go out and enjoy them again once the current situation passes. This luxurious 1940s style houndstooth wool swing coat with black satin lining will keep me warm and feeling stylish during the chilliest of nights out.

At first this coat appeared to me to suit a more 50s-60s style than what I usually go for, as many of the lookbook images reminded me more of mid-century styling and aesthetics. However, after seeing so many beautiful 40s dames looking splendid in theirs, I had to add one to my collection.

The classic houndstooth is more of a black and light grey than a bright in-your-face white, which suits me and my wardrobe just fine! The fabric isn’t as weighty as I had expected, which I also really like. It’s light and easy to move in, and isn’t cumbersome to carry around like some of my other long winter coats. It isn’t as warm as these other coats, so a wool cardigan or warm 40s jacket would be needed underneath in mid-winter. The subtle shoulder pads help create that strong, angular look of 1940s coats and jackets, and the length hits nicely below my knees, but not awkwardly low on my calves. High quality tailoring with a silky black inner lining means this coat looks just as striking and elegant worn open or casually draped over the shoulders of a Victory Suit. Wear it with contrast black seamed stockings and a pair of oxfords, or high waisted trousers and a billowy blouse, this coat adds a statement-making classic finish to an outfit – even if your wardrobe is otherwise modern.

This swing coat is currently stocked by Call Me Valerie, and can be found here.
